Pictures are up!
Hello team!
I just finished posting the pictures that I had on my camera, and a few from some other teammates. If you have some you'd like to share, e-mail them to Kendra at ragbrai@wartburg.edu and I'll put them on the blog. Thanks again for a great ride and we'll see you next year on RAGBRAI XXXVI.

Day 7 Pictures Dyersville to Bellevue - THE LAST DAY!
Day 6 Pictures Independence to Dyersville
This is the homemade sign that was just outside of Dyersville. I don't know who made it, but THANK YOU! It was a wonderful surprise, and a nice motivation as I was climbing up one of the hills!
POOOORRRKKKK CHOOOOOP! The Mr. Pork Chop guy is retiring after RAGBRAI XXXV, but we hear that his son is taking over the business for next year. Yea!
John, Marilyn, Kendra, Randy and Linda all ride into Dyersville together.Day 5 Pictures Cedar Falls to Independence
Day 2 pictures Spencer to Humboldt
Brianne, Linda and Kendra stop for a quick break at Gillett Grove, just 15 miles from Spencer
Randy, Kendra, Linda, Brianne and John stop at the volcano in Laurens, Iowa to meet the town's mayor! Aloha!

Outside Tom Latham's mom's house. These women formed a band and played for riders. The sign reads "We play for free, we stop for a dollar." Very cute!!

Day 7 - We Made It!
"Proper preparation prevents poor performance."
I heard this saying several times throughout the week from Rick, our support driver. As I approached the almost 400 foot drop into Bellevue on Saturday, going 35 mph with the brakes on, I realized how true that saying is. Since I've never been much of a hill climber, I was a little nervous going into Saturday's ride. We had a little over 3000 feet of climb, the most all week. It was also the shortest day too, at 56.6 miles. I approached each hill as if it was one that I had already done before on my weekly training rides to Bremer and back. That mental trick seemed to work because by late morning I was basically through all of the "tough" ones and was on the home stretch into the last town.
I rode most of the day with Linda, Randy and John. Although at some point we lost John and didn't meet up with him again until right outside of Bellevue. Our first passthrough town was Cascade and we stood in a long line to wait for chris cakes (pancakes). Randy had a great idea to call out that Linda and I were "first-timers" through the pancake line. I didn't quite know what to expect until I got up there. The pancake guy (a Wartburg alum?) told me to take 2 steps back from the serving line, and just as I did that, pancakes started flying at me. Apparently I somehow lost my ability to catch anything flying in the air, as cakes were flying on my head, behind my back -- almost anywhere but on my plate! I was laughing so hard and I think people in line were enjoying the sight, although I was a little hungry and really just wanted to eat the pancakes, not have to catch them first!! We stopped a couple other times too, before entering Bellevue just before noon. Once we got into town, the trip to the Mississippi was a little dangerous in my opinion. There were cars and support vehicles lined up on the streets, and maneuvering through traffic was hard. We finally made it to the Mississippi and waited in line to dip our front tires into river. It was a great feeling to finally finish the ride across Iowa and share that moment with my teammates. The other half of our Wartburg group was also able to meet up earlier that morning so they could dip their tires together as well.
After the tire dipping, we headed back to the vehicles to get ready for the journey back to Waverly. It was amazing the bond our teammates formed with each other in just one week's time. I was sad to see everyone leave when we pulled into Waverly, but I know that many of us will still stay in contact with each other. I am still sorting through pictures at home, and I will post more either this week or next. Thanks again to everyone who was a part of Team Knight Riders on RAGBRAI XXXV. It was an experience that I will never forget.

Day 6 -- Dyersville -- A Field of Dreams
Greetings everyone from the beautiful countryside of Dyersville, Iowa!! The ride today was another real easy one, which is a nice break on the legs, I must say. :) Just a few minor hills as we get closer to the river, but the majority of our climbing will happen tomorrow as we head to Bellevue, our final destination. Three teammates and I made today our "leisure day" which meant we spent more time in our pass through towns then we do riding in between the towns. I am so thankful it just rained hard last night and cleared up early this morning so we didn't have to deal with being wet all day. I also didn't feel the rush to get in right away, since we didn't really have the afternoon heat to deal with that we have had earlier on in the ride.
Highlights of the ride today: Breakfast burrito in Lamont and a stop at Mr. Pork Chop (Paul the Pork Chop guy retires after today). We were 6 or so miles from Dyersville when we passed a homemade sign along the road that read "Go Wartburg" written all over it along with our team name - the Knight Riders. Thank you to whoever made that sign! I ended up pulling over at the last minute so I could get a picture of it. I will be able to post pictures when I get back to Waverly tomorrow afternoon,
As I mentioned earlier, we have the most climb tomorrow on our ride. We will be climbing 3000 feet, but I am hoping the hills are rolling to make it as easy on the legs as possible. :)
Well, I am off to find some dessert -- as Bri pointed out, we eat quite a bit on this ride. It will be difficult to get used to not eating every hour. In fact, I am so used to putting on my cycling clothes and sunscreen first thing in the morning and getting out and riding. I am also worried that I may show up to work on Monday morning looking for the pancake guy!!!
We should be in fairly early to Bellevue tomorrow, and then we are heading back to Waverly. Our support drivers have been absolutely AMAZING on this ride!! Thank you so much Marv, Rick, Terry, and Bob for spending the week with us. Without them, this wouldn't be possible. I would also like to thank all of our host stays for their wonderful hospitality. Wartburg pride is running high!
I will post again when we return to Waverly.
Thanks for being a part of RAGBRAI XXXV with Team Knight Riders!

Saturday
Kendra and all,
It doesn't look like I'll be able to make it back for the ride on Saturday - I'll still be working. Take lots of pictures and let me know how it was! I'm jealous I couldn't stay for the rest of the ride.

Dear Blog, Part 3
Dear Blog,
I eat 1000 calories per hour. If I go more than an hour, my stomach begins to growl. After sleeping for 5 hours, I think my stomach may burst in anger from not being fed. So far, in 4 days, I've biked 250+ miles and gained 4 pounds. What a life!

Dear Blog, Part 1
As Kendra pointed out, I failed to post the blogs last night that we wrote down at dinner. Better late than never, right!?! (In case you're wondering, I had to leave the ride early to attend to some business at work...grr!)
I'm so glad to hear we won the kickball game. Combined with the Wartburg sticker that was added to the Luther banner outside of Cedar Falls last night, I'd consider that a pretty good week.! By the way, what was a Luther banner doing at the W-SR food stand!?!?!

Wartburg Wins!
Wartburg wins kickball games vs. Coe! Score was 8-1, and 2-0. Thank you to the Coe team for hosting. Zach Weiglan slammed two homeruns in the first game to pull out the big win. I'd write more about the game, but I know that Coe's team captain is probably reading this, and I don't want to give away all of my secrets. ;)
Wartburg wins! Wartburg wins! They have invited us for a rematch next year. Better start practicing there Coe!

Day 5 - Independence - It's a flush
Dear blog,
Sorry it has taken me so long to post! We are staying in Independence tonight at an alum's house and we are fortunate to have a computer with Internet (along with many other wonderful amenities). Actually, all of our RAGBRAI hosts have been outstanding throughout our journey! Last night we were extremely spoiled and stayed at Valley Lutheran High School in Cedar Falls. We had the entire school to ourselves and it was good to have a lot of space to move around. Half of our team has been tent camping and the other half are sleeping indoors. Last night however, all of our teammates were able to sleep indoors in the air conditioning. Thanks again Valley!!
Since its been a few days since I've posted, there are LOTS and LOTS of updates. We created a list last night during supper of some of the highlights, and I gave Brianne the task of blogging with those. I haven't seen a new post yet though, so be patient. :)
I do have to mention that we had our first Lance sighting on Day 3 about 2 miles from Humboldt. He whizzed past me with his entourage and I was able to pick him out right away. In addition to cycling, I've been keeping busy fueling my body with apple pie (breakfast on Day 3), Tender Tom's turkey (Days 3 and 4) and Beekman's homemade ice cream (Day 3). Still haven't seen one sign for gelato, which is surprising since last year on RAGBRAI it was everywhere.
The ride today into Independence was AWESOME! Although I was one of the last ones to leave the school this morning (6:30--about the time I've been getting out almost every day) I pulled into Independence around 12:30. We stopped five times (Denver, Klinger, Dunkerton, Fairbank and a 1-minute stop at the Tender Tom's stand outside of Ottersville). It has got to be the easiest ride so far this whole week. I'm not sure if it's because its been the shortest so far (62 miles) or if my body/legs are getting used to riding nearly 80 miles everyday, so 60 miles seems like a breeze. At any rate, it was fun to cycle through my stomping grounds, and I even got to meet up with my parents near Klinger. I also ran into quite a few people that I knew, but I didn't know that they were riding today! I also managed to make it through the day using only flush toilets -- something that rarely happens on RAGBRAI. :) Cyclists are just sooo excited at being able to use running water, or modern conveniences for the most part. It's funny!!
We've been wearing our Wartburg jerseys on the ride, and have ran into quite a few alums, parents of alums, etc. Those jerseys are great conversation starters! We've also ran into some Luther folks, who think they need to taunt us. It's all in good fun, and makes the miles go by a lot faster.
Unfortunately, we have about 7 riders that have decided to not finish out the ride. A few minor injuries, and our other team captain who got into a bad accident and broke his collarbone. He's doing okay, but in a lot of pain. Read the full story here: http://www.desmoinesregister.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=2007707250357
Tonight we have our kickball game tonight vs. Coe at 7 p.m. Our host is also catering in a lasagna meal from Leo's in Oelwein (yum!) Although I was able to get great sleep last night thanks to the miracle of modern medicine, but every day when I am on my bike, I want to take an afternoon nap, and that never happens. It's just too much fun to reconnect with our teammates and our alumni hosts!
I hope to blog from Dyersville -- and sometime I will get some new pics up too. I will also let you know how the kickball game goes tonight!
See you tomorrow in Dyersville. Yea!

A Knight in the Pews (Spencer Day 1)
What a great ride today!! We stayed at Immanuel Lutheran Church last night in Rock Rapids and half of the team stayed inside -- many actually slept in the pews, and a few of my teammates said that was a highlight. Some of the team got up really early (i.e. before 5:30 when I finally opened my eyes) and headed out for the day. We were just 4 miles outside of Rock Rapids when I got a phone call from a friend/teammate who said her peddle fell off. I think my response was "your what fell off?" It's too bad to have a mechanical failure that early in the ride, especially since it was her first RAGBRAI. She ended up getting a ride back into town with a guy named Henry that had his pickup truck parked on the side of a gravel road, and was able to reconnect with one of our support driver so she could get her bike fixed at one of the passthrough towns.
For me, the morning flew by, and we were blessed with cloudy skies and a fairly breezy wind. Ok, so I don't think wind was a blessing. :) That was real fun as we were heading south out of Melvin, the half-way town. I pulled in to Spencer around 2 pm and we went to Pizza Ranch to take our team photo later on this afternoon. Now the team is checking out Spencer, and getting ready for tomorrow. I have lots of stories, but very limited time, so I guess those are the only stories of the day for now.
We are staying at a '97 alum's house today, and we are so thankful that they are able to house us! They have two cute girls who want to send everyone reading our blog a message. Here is from Makenna, who is 3.

And here's something from Aria:
good luck bike riders. love aria.
We've got the longest day tomorrow (not by much--a couple of miles). Hope the wind is on our backs!
See you in Humboldt!!
Kendra
P.S. The ride today was pretty quiet, not much Lance talk. Once we got into Spencer, we found out he is staying at a mansion here in town, but I have yet to see him. I also haven't had a piece of pie, a pork chop, Tender Tom's turkey OR Gelato -- 4 staple food items that are very popular on RAGBRAI. Maybe tomorrow I will get adventurous. ;)

Rock Rapids -- The Wild Wild West?
Greetings from Rock Rapids!! We left Waverly around 10 am today and things went off without a hitch. After a couple of stops in Forest City and Estherville, we were here around 3 pm. We won the title of being the first RAGBRAI riders to stop at the Subway in Forest City, so our team felt quite honored. :) Most of the talk on the way to RR was about the Harry Potter book, surprisingly enough. We also stopped at Pizza Ranch here in town and thanked them for being a team sponsor. I've got some photos to post, but since I am at a public computer, that will have to wait till Spencer. Everyone's anxious to get on their bikes tomorrow, including me.

Double Dippin!
3 days till RAGBRAI. WHOOO HOOO!! The team leaves Saturday morning for Rock Rapids. After a nice long haul, we should arrive in Rock Rapids in the mid to late afternoon. I haven't been able to get many miles on my bike this week as I would have liked (lots of last minute logistical stuff to finalize) but am very anxious to start pedaling on Sunday! To "train" this week, I've been eating a moderate amount of double dippers -- you know, the chocolate-coated peanuts that Brach's makes? I figure it will prepare me for tire dipping on RAGBRAI, right? ha ha What's your favorite "training" moment this week?

Kickball game vs. Coe
In addition to cycling 477 miles on RAGBRAI, our team will also take on Coe College in a kickball game on Thursday, July 26 in Independence, Iowa. I've given Coe the "home field advantage" because at this point, they are going to need all the luck they can get to win! We need 10 people to play the game, and right now have 7 signed up. If you are interested in playing, please email Kendra at kendra.kehe@wartburg.edu. Any and all Wartburg alums, parents, students or friends of the college can play on Wartburg's team. Come help us dominate Coe!
15 days till RAGBRAI!

4 digit training miles????
I will be thrilled if I get in half of the miles we will ride during RAGBRAI week for my training!! I have at least 70 miles in since early April (computers needed new batteries at first and I have ridden 2 different bikes, so am not exactly sure).
I recognize some names within the email list and look forward to riding with some again (we have ridden with at least 3 before!), seeing other familiar faces from our Wartburg days and meeting all of the other alums/friends of Wartburg! I am getting excited to experience RAGBRAI this new way!

23 days and counting!
First off, where did the summer go? Although it technically just started, if you haven't been out getting your miles in before RAGBRAI, you have just 23 days to do so! Personally, I have around 600 miles in, but wouldn't it be nice if I could get to 4-digits in mileage before the 22nd of July? Yeah...yeah...yeah....whatever, right? That's my goal anyway. Well -- hope the training is going well for everyone on the team! We leave Wartburg on Saturday, July 21 for Rock Rapids. Housing is all lined up, now all that's left to do is pedal!
